Natalie’s Pro Tip

For the smoothest chocolate, use Ghirardelli melting wafers when making your witch’s hat cookies. If the chocolate starts to thicken while you’re working, just reheat it for a few seconds in the microwave.

I decorated my cookies with a few different sprinkle variations - some large confetti like sprinkles and some nonpareils. I like to use a small bowl to catch the extra sprinkles so that I can put the excess back into the container.

Substitutions and Variations

  • Other Cookie Options - You can also use a fudge stripe cookie for the base of the hat if you want a different texture.
  • Kiss Choices - Try dark chocolate kisses, milk chocolate, or even peanut butter-flavored Hershey’s Kisses for variety.
  • Add some colored frosting - Tint vanilla frosting with purple food coloring or gel food coloring to pipe a colorful band around each hat.
  • Sprinkles - Add festive sprinkles or orange and black nonpareils around the top of the hat for a fun touch.
  • Candy Melts - Instead of Ghirardelli melting wafers, you can use candy melts to secure the kiss to the cookie.

How To Make This Halloween Cookie Recipe

Step 1. Prepare the cookies. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Arrange your Oreo cookies (the base of the hat) in a single layer. Unwrap all the Hershey's hugs.

Step 2. Melt the chocolate. In a small bowl, microwave the Ghirardelli chocolate melting wafers until smooth.

Step 3. Assemble. You can either dip the tops of the Oreo cookies in the melted chocolate or spoon a small amount of melted chocolate onto the center of the cookie. Then press a Hershey’s Kiss on top to form the witch’s hat shape. Immediately add the sprinkles before the chocolate sets.

An alternative to dipping the top of the oreo is spooning the chocolate on top of the cookie.

Step 4. Set and Serve. Transfer the cookies to a wire rack until the chocolate sets. Then transfer the witch hats to a platter and enjoy!

Notes and FAQs

Do I need to refrigerate Witch Hat Cookies?

No need! Just store them in an airtight container at room temperature. Avoid direct sunlight or heat to keep the chocolate from melting.

Can I make these ahead for a party?

Yes. These are a great recipe for make-ahead Halloween parties. The cookies hold up beautifully for several days, and the colors stay vibrant.

How long will they last?

Stored properly, your Halloween witch hat cookies will stay fresh for up to 5 days. If freezing, use a freezer container and separate layers with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
